“Quicken cannot connect to my bank”
CC-501 and CC-502 are connection failures rather than file problems: Quicken could not complete the conversation with your bank. No amount of file repair helps, but there is a reliable way to keep your books current while the connection is broken.
Symptoms
One Step Update stops with CC-501 or CC-502 The bank website works normally in a browser Other accounts at other banks update without trouble
What actually causes it
The bank changed its online banking platform
Express Web Connect works by an intermediary service reading your bank on your behalf. When the bank redesigns its site or adds a verification step, that service breaks until it is updated — which is out of both your hands and Quicken's.
Credentials or verification changed
A password change, a new security question or newly required two-factor verification stops the automated session, since it cannot answer a prompt meant for a person.
A temporary outage at either end
These codes also appear during maintenance windows, in which case they clear on their own within a day and need no action at all.
How to fix it
- Wait a day first — a meaningful share of these clear by themselves and everything else here takes longer.
- If it persists, download the statement manually from your bank's website and import the file; that keeps your books current regardless of the connection.
- Drop the downloaded file into the fixer below before importing, so a connection problem does not turn into a file problem too.
- Deactivate and reactivate online services for the account, which forces the connection to be rebuilt against the bank's current setup.
