“Transfers between my accounts appear twice”

Move money from checking to savings and your register shows two entries: one leaving, one arriving. Both are real, and neither bank export is wrong — but leaving them unlinked double-counts the movement in every report you run afterwards.

Symptoms

  • A single transfer produces one withdrawal and one deposit as unrelated transactions
  • Reports show inflated income and spending totals
  • The net worth figure is right while the category totals are not

What actually causes it

Cause 1

Each account is exported separately

The checking export knows money left; the savings export knows money arrived. Neither file contains any reference to the other account, because from each account's point of view only one side of the transfer happened.

Cause 2

No shared identifier links the two halves

Statement formats provide no field that says "this is the counterpart of that". Software has to infer the pairing from matching amounts and nearby dates, and it only attempts that when both accounts are set up in the same file.

Cause 3

One side was imported before the other existed

If the destination account was created after the first import, there was nothing to match against, and the entry was categorised as ordinary income or spending instead.

How to fix it

  1. Confirm both files are intact using the fixer below, so you are matching complete data rather than a partial import.
  2. Import both accounts before categorising either, which gives your software both halves to pair.
  3. Recategorise one side as a transfer to the other account; most apps then absorb the matching entry automatically.
  4. Set up a rule for recurring transfers so future imports pair themselves.

Skip the manual edit — fix it automatically

The fixer confirms each file is complete, which matters here: a transfer with one half missing looks exactly like a categorisation problem. Free, no signup, no upload.
