Wells Fargo

“The Wells Fargo file is rejected by my software”

Wells Fargo exports are usually well-formed, which makes their failures confusing: the file looks fine, and the error blames the format. The causes are almost always the download options rather than the data itself.

Symptoms

  • The file is refused with a generic invalid-format message
  • Fewer transactions arrive than the statement shows
  • Only some accounts export successfully

What actually causes it

Cause 1

The download range exceeded what is available

Requesting more history than the bank retains returns a shorter file without any warning that the rest was dropped, which reads as a truncated or broken export rather than a limit.

Cause 2

A format chosen for a different program

The export menu lists several options whose names refer to software products. The Quicken and QuickBooks variants carry different identifiers, and the spreadsheet option is plain CSV with no account information at all.

Cause 3

Session timeout during generation

Larger exports take time to build, and a session that expires mid-generation yields a truncated file or an error page saved under the expected filename.

How to fix it

  1. Drop the file into the fixer below: it reports the transaction count and whether the structure is complete, which separates "short range" from "truncated download" immediately.
  2. If it reports truncation, download again in smaller date ranges rather than one long one.
  3. Confirm you picked the export variant that matches your software, not the spreadsheet option, when the error mentions accounts or identifiers.
  4. Compare the reported count against your statement so a short file is caught before it reaches your books.

Skip the manual edit — fix it automatically

Knowing the file is structurally complete rules out the format and points you at the download options, which is where these failures actually live. Free, no signup, no upload.
