“My bank merged and imports stopped working”
A merger changes several things at once — the institution identifier, often the account number, usually the export format, and sometimes the available history. Each alone breaks an import; together they make it look as though your setup is beyond repair.
Symptoms
Imports that ran for years fail after the merger date The software offers to create a new account for a file that is clearly yours Downloaded history stops at the merger date
What actually causes it
The institution identifier changed
Every OFX file names the institution. After a merger that value belongs to the acquiring bank, so software matching on it treats the file as coming from somewhere it has never connected to.
Account numbers were reissued
Where accounts were renumbered, the identifier inside the file no longer matches what your software stored, which is what produces the offer to create a new account.
History did not carry over
The new platform often starts from the migration date. Older transactions remain in your books but can no longer be re-downloaded, so a gap cannot be filled later.
How to fix it
- Export whatever history the old platform still offers before it disappears — this is the only step with a deadline.
- Drop the new file into the fixer below to confirm it is sound and see the identifiers it carries.
- Disconnect and reconnect the account so the new institution and account identifiers are recorded.
- Import into your existing account rather than accepting the new-account offer, so the history stays in one place.
